I think for the most part it is easier to get a job in an artistic field with a degree from art school, not completely necessarily, but it would definitely behoove someone trying to get into the industry to be able to flash a degree at a job interview.
I said no because after racking up $30,000+ in student loans, I discovered my granny was learning the same basics in her community art class that cost her $5 each time she went.
*eye....twitch*
That and I did my best work outside of class, earned a degree that doesn't give me a job with stable income to repay all that loan debt and dealing with all the people there wasn't worth the effort in the end.
Eh I'm a little biased I admit, it was pretty great sometimes with the right teachers, but since you're never sure what they will be like... I had a few 180 on me and that was very discouraging... (from "excellent!" to "what is this crap?" O.O)
Anywho, if I had known, I would have gone into movie makeup or business skills, and maybe work office in a zoo or some charity, do something I like WITH a steadier income XD
I'm the same way. I've read quite a few posts on different art sites advising the same type of thing though. I guess the main reason that I started school this time was so I could devote more time to it, but I really felt like school sapped me of my creativity. Maybe it wasn't school, but I found myself never wanting to do the school work, but wanting to do other work instead.
I found having to conform with the way they wanted me to work sapped my creativity too. I don't need 30 thumbnails to know what I want to do, nor do I normally do color tests or things like that, having to stop/start based on approval and do what they liked seemed...well that's not being creative, that's being someone's bitch XD
Hi! I saw your name pop up on my visitor log, and I thought I would comment ! Honestly, it might be different where you live, but I wouldnt go to an art school in my state ! They are really obsessed with making statements rather then developing your skill. When I was in school, my art teachers always seemed to praise pieces that made some kind of statement.. like a pile of cigarettes glued together. Or even a blank canvas with one angry stroke of paint. I mean thats all well and good, but do you need to go to a school to learn about how to make a political staement? They didnt seem to do a lot to develop artistic skill, and the ones in my town just seem a little pretentious. I know people who have done art degrees and said it didnt teach them much at all. Having said that however, I found this new course that teaches people how to draw and do graphics in order to set up a portfoilio, which seemed like an ok course. /end rant

Very cool! I agree with you, some art schools are more about the emotive side of art, rather than the cold hard reality of just putting in a ton of work to get better. I think that they are afraid that if people find out that you can put in a ton of effort, you can improve and maybe teach yourself a lot of their curriculum! haha
its good for some people and bad for others. Going to Art School (design school in my case) it helped me a lot, I was shown many ways of thinking and processing my ideas, which i would not have gotten if i had just kept to drawing in my own time. You are pushed not only by yourself but by other people which is very important, but i think the main thing that is good about art school (this might depend on the art school too) is the connects you gain, and the people you meet because you are around others you are as dedicated your field as you are.
